Zi Wei Dou Shu — the twelve-seat chart of a life

紫微斗數 zǐwēi dǒushù, or Purple Star astrology, is one of the most precise methods for reading a birth and the course of a life. Distributing the stars across the twelve seats, it maps an individual’s potential and the ten-year run each seat holds.

Enter the date, time and place of a birth to generate the complete board of seats and stars.

Two boards on one page cut the year in two places and neither is a mistake. The pillars turn at 立春 lìchūn because that is what an almanac printing four pillars does; this board counts its month and its day on the lunar calendar, so the year that opened at 正月初一 zhēngyuèchūyī is the reckoning coherent with the rest of it. A birth in the weeks between the two lays out two different boards, the stem of the year being what seats the four transformations.
